Thought for the Week – Sunday 12th July 2020

SUNDAY 12 JULY 2020 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME (YEAR A)
PARABLE OF THE SOWER AND THE SEED GOSPEL: ST MATTHEW 13:1-23

Today, and for the next few Sundays, we listen to ‘parables of the kingdom’ in passages of Chapter 13 of St Matthew’s Gospel. This chapter could be described as the celebration of Christ coming to the world to sow the seed of God’s Word. In His parables, Jesus uses simple comparisons from everyday life to convey His message. He uses them as an effective means of teaching on how His followers can play their part in building the kingdom of God.
Today we hear the parable of the Sower and the Seed. Through the grace of Baptism, each of us received the seed of faith. In life’s journey we encounter many situations and circumstances that hinder the growth and the nurturing of the seed of faith that was sown, obstacles that prevent it from reaching its full potential. We pray today that the seed of faith, first received through the Sacrament of Baptism, will be cultivated by us, and by all who lead us in faith, so that God’s Word can take root, enabling us to grow strong in faith and become ‘the seed which fell on to rich ground.’

‘Although the life of a person is in a land full of thorns and weeds,
there is always a space in which the good seed can grow. You have to trust God.’ Pope Francis.
