Parish Newsletter – Sunday 10th January 2021

Your Parish Newsletter for Sunday 10th January 2021:

SUNDAY 10 JANUARY 2021 – BAPTISM OF THE LORD: GOSPEL – ST MARK 1:7-11

The Baptism of Jesus was a defining moment in His life, marking the start of His public ministry. When we receive the Sacrament of Baptism, it is a defining moment in our lives – the beginning of a life-long journey of growing as members of the Body of Christ, and growing in responsibility as members of the family of the Church. In celebrating the Baptism of the Lord today, we reflect on how we live out our responsibilities as baptised Catholics.
We pray the blessings of the Christ-Child on the children of our parish who were baptised in the last year and for their parents and Godparents, that they will be guided by the Holy Spirit in the responsibilities they have undertaken.

COLLECTION:

THANK YOU for your generosity to the collection last week: amount will be published next week. Thank you also to those who contribute by Standing Order. Your ongoing financial support of the parish is particularly appreciated, given the extra effort required when the church is closed for public worship. I will continue to be available in the church after the 12noon Rosary each day, for anyone who wishes to bring along envelopes.
If anyone who does not currently have an envelope box would like to receive one, please contact Lorna at the parish office. Likewise, you can contact Lorna if you wish to start contributing by Standing Order.
In due course, a Financial Statement – giving a summary of the Income and Expenditure for the parish for the last year (2020) – will be published.

You can also request envelopes by simply clicking on this link: ‘Get in Touch‘ and then select Parish Envelopes from the drop-down menu.

SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD:

CATECHESIS CORNER:

Q. What does the Old Testament contain?

A. The Old Testament contains 46 of the 73 books of the Bible. These are made up of: The Books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy (these first five books are called the Torah, or Pentateuch); Historical books (eg, Judges, Kings); Wisdom books (eg, Psalms, Ecclesiastes); Prophets (eg, Isaiah, Jeremiah). The Old Testament tells how God made a series of ‘covenants’ (binding oaths) with His people Israel, in which He promised blessing in return for loving obedience. At our Sunday Mass the First Reading is usually taken from the Old Testament. There is usually a strong link between the First Reading and the Gospel.

Last year, Pope Francis declared the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time each year (Sunday 24 January, this year), as Sunday of the Word of God. The Pope established this Day to encourage amongst us a better understanding of the Bible but, as well, intended it as more than a one-day event in the year for, in the words of the Holy Father, “We need to grow in our knowledge and love of the Scriptures and of the risen Lord…..The Bible belongs above all to those called to hear its message and to recognise themselves in its words…..The Word of God unites believers and makes them one people.” Pope Francis invites us never to take God’s Word for granted but, instead, to “let ourselves be nourished by it, in order to acknowledge and live fully our relationship with Him and with our brothers and sisters”.

As part of our parish welcome to the establishment by Pope Francis of ‘Sunday of the Word,’ for the Sundays of this month, we will have a Bible Catechesis Corner in our bulletin, providing fundamental information on the Bible and its contents. Each week, we will have a different Question and Answer; it is offered with the aim of helping us to build on our knowledge of and familiarity with the overall structure and contents of the Bible.

If you have a Bible in your home, please take it out to help you in getting to grips with the information provided weekly.
Parents are asked to share the Q & A with their children each week, or, vice versa!

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION:

This is the version that we recite during each of our Masses – you are encouraged to pray it
and to teach it to children.

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.
