Parish Newsletter for Sunday 18th April 2021

Your Parish Newsletter for Sunday 18th April 2021:

SUNDAY 18 APRIL 2021 – THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER GOSPEL: ST LUKE 24:35-48

The disciples are trying to make sense of recent events. Jesus tells them how what has happened to Him had all been foretold in the Scriptures and that His suffering, death and resurrection were central to the fulfilment of God’s plan for salvation. As God’s children – children of the Resurrection – we are all part of God’s plan. We, the disciples of today, try to make sense of events in our lives too; we experience fears, doubts, hopes and joys, but in the ordinariness of our daily and family lives – in the experiences of love, forgiveness, compassion, reconciliation, generosity, the work of justice and the making of peace – are the signs of the Spirit of the Risen Lord within us and among us. We thank God today for revealing His great love and mercy to us in the Scriptures and in the Eucharist and we ask Him for the grace to open our hearts and minds to these great gifts and to follow His glorious plan for our lives.

COLLECTION:

THANK YOU for your generosity to the collection last week, which amounted to €1,997. I continue to be available in the church each day after the Rosary for those who wish to bring along their envelope. Your ongoing financial support of the parish is very much appreciated. Thank you also to those who contribute by Standing Order and those who make online payments.

Download our Standing Order Form here.

You can also request envelopes by simply clicking on this link: ‘Get in Touch‘ and then select Parish Envelopes from the drop-down menu.

TROCAIRE COLLECTION:

Thank you for your generosity so far in the Trocaire collection. For those returning their Trocaire box to the church or Parochial House, you are asked to include notes or cheques only, in so far as possible, for ease of counting in general and, in particular, to reduce the level of risk for the counters. Please note: cheques should be made payable to Trocaire (not the parish). Thank you very much for your co-operation.

CHARITABLE DONATIONS (GIFT AID) SCHEME:

I am hoping that, in this coming month, with your support and co-operation, we will make good inroads into building up this scheme to its full potential in the parish, so that, together, we can maximise in claiming from the Revenue Commissioners on all eligible donations. With the upcoming graveyard project and the proposed new toilet facilities in the church, Gift Aid will be a most useful source of additional income. So, if you are a tax-payer and pay €250 or more per annum to the weekly collection, then I appeal to you, please, to consider joining the scheme. Remember, it is at no extra cost to you! Please contact Lorna in the parish office for an application form or contact me at the Parochial House. Thank you to those who have signed up already.

THE NET:

The April edition of The Net is now available to read online, on www.derrydiocese.org. It is also available on our parish Facebook. As always, it contains a wide range of interesting articles and interviews on faith matters and photos of events in parishes across the diocese.

DERRY DIOCESAN VOCATIONS WEEK – 17th – 25th April:

The annual Derry Diocesan Vocations Week is celebrated this week, ending on Good Shepherd Sunday, 25th April. The theme for this year’s Vocations Week is based on “Patris Corde” (‘With a Father’s Heart.’), which is Pope Francis’ recent publication for the year of Saint Joseph. You are encouraged to participate in the diocesan schedule of daily prayer and Mass, as well as devotional reflections based on the Angelus, Daily Examen and the Mysteries of the Rosary. These resources are all available online at derrydiocese.org and derryvocations.org .
On the five evenings of Monday, 19 April, through to Friday, 23rd April, Bishop McKeown will host a series of interviews with guests from throughout the diocese, discussing how they have answered God’s call to vocation. These twenty-minute interviews will be broadcast live online at 7:00pm each evening, followed by a broadcast of the celebration of the Daily Examen. At 8:00pm, after 7.30pm Mass each evening, Bishop McKeown will lead the Rosary, before concluding with night prayer. Again, these live broadcasts can be viewed at derrydiocese.org and derryvocations.org at the specific times.

As part of the centenary celebrations in our diocese for the Legion of Mary, there will be a special Mass for the Legionaries of the parishes of the diocese celebrated in St Theresa’s Church, Sion Mills, on Wednesday 28 April, at 7pm. You are warmly invited to participate online, on: http://melmountparish.com/sionwebcam.html . The Rosary and Legion of Mary Prayers will be recited.

Lord Jesus Christ, gentle Shepherd, You know Your sheep,
And You know how to reach their hearts.
Give to the people of the parishes of the Diocese of Derry
Hearts that are open to the call of the Holy Spirit.
Speak to the hearts of the young men of our diocese
That they may hear Your call to follow You and serve Your people as priests.
Awaken in them the courage to answer: ‘Here I am, Lord, Send me.’

St Eugene, pray for us. St Columba, pray for us.
St John Vianney, pray for us.
St Patrick, pray for us.
