Parish Newsletter for Sunday 1st May 2022

SUNDAY 1 MAY 2022
THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

The highs and lows that the disciples experience in trying to grasp the meaning of recent events are the kind of mixed emotions with which we are all familiar at some stage in our day-to-day lives – joy, confusion, hope, doubt, fear, despair. In today’s Gospel, we are told that the disciples decide to go back to what they know best, to their old way of life, as fishermen. In the confusing circumstances in which we find ourselves at times, we too sometimes find it easier to ‘go back to our old ways’, to struggle with life in our own ways and to forget about the loving presence of Jesus. We pray today that the joys of the Resurrection will renew and refresh us in our ways and that we will be open in heart and mind to the change that Jesus’ presence brings to our lives.

MAY – MONTH OF MARY:

May is a month of special devotion to Our Lady. It is a tradition of our faith that we express, in some special form, the importance of Mary, model in faith, in our homes during this month. In our homes, we can create a sacred space with a May Altar, we can make special effort to pray the Family Rosary each evening or a decade of the Rosary or perhaps pray the Angelus or some other short Marian prayers.

The May Altar is a great way for children to become actively involved in honouring Our Lady at home. May Altars can be created very simply, with a clean white cloth, a statue of Our Lady, Rosary beads, holy water and some flowers. Parents are encouraged to pray with their children each day at the May Altar.

Our Rosary Group continues to pray the Rosary every week-day, starting twenty minutes before morning Mass. During this month, perhaps you might like to make special effort to come along and join in this special time of prayer in our parish. You would be very welcome. As always, sincere thanks to our Rosary Group for their great witness and the blessings that it brings upon our parish.

ROSARY AT OUR LADY’S GROTTO, PORTHALL:

You are invited to join us at the Grotto at Porthall on Friday of this week, 6 May, at 7.00pm, to pray the Rosary, for peace. Everyone is welcome.

SYNOD UPDATE:

On Monday evening of this week the parish Synod Team met to finalise the collation of the responses from our parish ‘listening evenings’, our online responses and our hand-written returns, to enable us to submit our parish response to the diocese. Responses from the parishes across the diocese will, in turn, be collated and, together with the collated responses from the listening events across the country, will be sent to Rome, in response to Pope Francis’ call for a synodal church, in which every Catholic voice matters. A summary of our parish submission (a summary of our parish listening opportunities) will be published soon.
The conversations and the information gleaned from our parish listening evenings, the online responses and the hand-written responses are also a great stepping stone for us locally, in helping us approach, address and meet the pastoral needs of our parish as we move forward. Thank you very much to all who participated. Sincere thanks also to the parish Synod Team, for all their work. It is very much appreciated.

WOMEN OF FAITH CONFERENCE 2022 will be broadcast live on Radio Maria Ireland on Saturday 7 May, from 2.00pm. Speakers: Sr Consilio (Cuan Mhuire), Wendy Grace (Catholic Speaker), Fr Freddy Warner, SMA, Sr Susan Evangelist (Sister of Mercy), Dr. Edward Sri (Scripture Scholar). You are warmly invited to join in.

MARY’S MEALS – PRAY IN MAY:

During May, Mary’s Meals invites us to join them in prayer, in thanksgiving for twenty years of little acts of love and generosity that have made their work possible, and in petition for God’s continued blessing, that Mary’s Meals will continue to grow and flourish enabling them to reach more hungry children. Each day Mary’s Meals reaches more than 2.2million children with a nutritious school meal in 20 countries. Further information and prayer resources including their new resource for children are available on www.marysmeals.org.uk/prayinmay

PRAYER FOR THE PEOPLE OF UKRAINE:

Loving God,
we pray for the people of Ukraine,
for all those suffering or afraid, that You will be close to them and protect them.
We pray for world leaders, for compassion, strength and wisdom to guide their choices.
We pray for the world that, in this moment of crisis,
we may reach out in solidarity to our brothers and sisters in need.
May we walk in Your ways, so that peace and justice become a reality
for the people of Ukraine, and for all the world.
Amen.

Please continue to pray our Parish Prayer:

God our Father, pour forth Your Holy Spirit on our parish. Guide us in Your ways, grant us Your vision.
Be our wisdom. Open our hearts and minds to Your Holy Word,
strengthen us with the Holy Eucharist, our food for the journey.
Help us to be people of prayer, trusting in Your constant presence in the challenges that we face.
With Your help, may our parish always be a place where Your love is known, Your light shines
and our parish families grow together in faith and mission. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

St. Patrick, pray for us.
