Parish Newsletter for Pentecost Sunday 5th June 2022

SUNDAY 5th JUNE 2022
PENTECOST SUNDAY

On this Feast of Pentecost, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost concludes our celebration of the Paschal Mystery – the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ, His Ascension into heaven and the coming of the Holy Spirit as God’s everlasting gift us. Pentecost is known as the Birthday of the Church. The Spirit of God was given to us in the Sacrament Baptism and strengthened in the Sacrament of Confirmation. The children who received the Sacrament of Confirmation this year will each bring along a symbol to the foot of the altar today that will remind them, and us, of the gift they have received.

God of heaven and earth, on this Birthday of Your Church,
we rejoice in the Spirit that, through the gifts of Baptism and Confirmation, is moving in each of our hearts,
strengthening us in faith and guiding us in following the example of Jesus, the Anointed One.
We pray: Come, O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your children, and kindle in them the fire of Your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, and You shall renew the face of the earth.

VOLUNTEER STEWARDS are required for our Blessing of the Graves on Monday 13 June, at 7.00pm. If you would like to help on the evening, please let me know this week. Those who offer their services will be asked to stay for a short meeting after the 11.00am Mass next Sunday, 12 June, so that we can organise ourselves in preparation for the Monday evening. Thank you!

WE WELCOME the children of our three schools who received the Sacrament of Confirmation this year to our 11.00am Mass today. Each child has been asked to bring along either a symbol or a drawing that represents one of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, or perhaps a short prayer to the Holy Spirit. These will be presented at the foot of the altar during Mass. There will be a special prayer and blessing of the children.

PARENTS OF FIRST HOLY COMMUNION CHILDREN, PLEASE NOTE:

The children of our two schools who received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion this year are invited to celebrate the great gift of the Eucharist in their young lives by participating in a Corpus Christi procession at our 11.00am Mass on Sunday 19 June – Feast of Corpus Christi (the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ). The children will be invited to wear their First Holy Communion outfit for this special occasion. Weather permitting, we will have an outside procession, which I will lead, carrying the Blessed Sacrament. The Corpus Christi procession, as some of you will know, is a great tradition of our faith on the Feast of Corpus Christi, and I am delighted that our Liturgy Working Group have proposed holding this event for our First Holy Communion children this year. Fuller details will be published in next week’s newsletter.

THE SYNODAL PATHWAY OF THE CHURCH:

As you know, synodal conversations have been taking place in parishes across the diocese, including our own, in recent months, in response to Pope Francis’ call for a two-year global consultation process leading to the 2023 Synod on Synodality. At this stage, parish responses (including our own) have been submitted to the diocese and the diocesan synthesis has been submitted, to form part of the national (Irish) submission to Rome. The Derry Diocesan submission can be read on the diocesan website, www.derrydiocese.org/synod. You are invited to read it, at your convenience. I am very grateful to everyone who contributed to our parish ‘listening’ events, either in person, online or on paper. It has been most helpful.
Our parish synod team met on Thursday evening of this week. The team is committed to ensuring that the fruits of the parish conversations and contributions are not ‘lost’ and are used to help us in the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for us as a parish. Initially, in the next week or so, you will be provided with a ‘paper’ summary of the findings of the conversations / submissions; we would then propose to provide further opportunities to meet with parishioners to listen to their views on the findings and to start a process of discerning together in what ways the fruits of the conversations and submissions might lead us as a parish, at practical level, in the months and years ahead. This will happen in the autumn.
I am most grateful to the parish synod team for giving of their time, energy and commitment to the synodal process. It is much appreciated.

JUNE – MONTH OF DEVOTION TO THE SACRED HEART:

June is the month of devotion to the Sacred Heart.
You are invited to place each day in the care of the Sacred Heart,
by praying each morning this simple but powerful Aspiration:

“Most Sacred Heart of Jesus,
I place all my trust in Thee.”

Parents are asked to teach this Aspiration to their children,
inviting the children to name the prayer intention for each day.
You may also wish to have a Sacred Space in your home devoted to the Sacred Heart,
with, perhaps, some red and white material, a statue of the Sacred Heart, a crucifix, some holy water
and a candle (to be lit and burnt under adult supervision).
Please include children in creating your Sacred Space.

BLESSING OF THE GRAVES:

Monday 13 June, at 7.00. Please make your family members aware. Also, if you know of any family, perhaps not from our parish, who would like to attend, please let them know and the date and time.
