Parish Newsletter for Sunday 24th July 2022

SUNDAY 24th JULY 2022
SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C)

In St Luke’s Gospel today, we hear the disciples asking Jesus to teach them how to pray. At times we may all wonder about ‘how, when and where’ to pray, to try and get it right! Scripture provides us with many references to the Prayer Life of Jesus. We can see from these that there are no hard and fast rules about how, when or where to pray; most of all, we can see the ‘simplicity’ of Jesus’ prayer life. We do not have to be on our knees to pray – prayer can be while driving the car, lying in bed, walking, at the dinner table, while we work, etc. It can be alone or it can be with others. While there are no rights and wrongs about the circumstances of prayer, we are asked to pray with trust in God and with submission to His will. We pray today the prayer Jesus left with us:

Our Father, who art in heaven……

WORLD DAY FOR GRANDPARENTS AND THE ELDERLY: is celebrated today, the Sunday closest to the Feast Day of Sts Joachim and Anne (26 July), parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus. Complementing the theme of Prayer in today’s Gospel, Pope Francis speaks the following uplifting challenge in his Message:
“Let us become, as it were, poets of prayer: let us develop a taste for finding our own words, let us once again take up those taught by the Word of God. Our trustful prayer can do a great deal: it can accompany the cry of pain of those who suffer, and it can help change hearts.” The full text of the Pope’s Message is on our parish Facebook page and on www.catholicbishops.ie Sts Joachim and Anne, pray for us.
