SUNDAY 4th SEPTEMBER 2022
TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C):
“Anyone who does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:27)
The cost of discipleship is presented in a stark way, in St Luke’s Gospel today. It challenges any tendency to become complacent in following Jesus. Staying faithful to the responsibilities attached to true discipleship is not always an easy choice. We pray today for the grace to make Jesus the centre of all the choices and commitments that we make, in our family life, in our places of work, in our personal lifestyle and in all our encounters with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

COLLECTION:
THANK YOU for your generosity in last week’s collection, which amounted to €1,734. Thank you also to those who contribute by Standing Order or online.
PLEASE NOTE:
Following further guidance issued by the diocese in relation to the easing of Covid restrictions, face coverings in our church are no longer required. For those who still prefer to wear a face covering, you are, of course, welcome to do so. Face coverings will, however, no longer be available/supplied in the church. Hand sanitiser will continue to be available for your use.
Also, as of next week, we will resume the collection baskets, in the traditional way. Collection boxes will no longer be available at the back of the church. When the baskets have been passed around, they will then be brought to the foot of the sanctuary, where they will remain until the end of Mass.
In the event of an upturn in the number of Covid cases again, we can review these matters.
PLEASE NOTE:
The Parish Office will be closed this week for annual leave. Parish newsletter notices, including anniversaries, can be emailed to the parish email as normal: clonleighparish@derrydiocese.org . Parish newsletter notices need to be with us by noon on Thursday of each week, to ensure that they are included. Thank you.
DO THIS IN MEMORY is a parish-based programme aimed at integrating the home, parish and school in the preparation of the children receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Recognising the importance of actively involving all three in the children’s journey towards these very important steps in their faith, the programme centres in the parish celebration of the Sunday Mass, and in the home. It complements and supports the existing work of sacramental preparation in our schools.
I am delighted to introduce the Do This in Memory programme in our parish this year, for our First Communicants. The programme will start with Enrolment Sunday on Sunday 25 September 2022, at the 11.00am Mass.
Parents, you will very shortly be provided with the full programme information, and with resources, which are designed to help you in your children’s ‘home preparation’ for the sacraments. In the church, the programme takes place once a month, for the eight months before First Holy Communion Day, and concludes during the parish celebration of the Feast of Corpus Christi, the month after First Holy Communion. You will receive a list of the particular dates for each month for the Church celebration.
Please take note now of Enrolment Sunday, as you will need to attend the 11.00am Mass on Sunday 25 September 2022, for the Enrolment of your child.
I am very grateful to the members of our Parish Faith Formation Working Group who are co-ordinating the programme for us. I very much look forward to your co-operation and participation, as it is very important that all the children will be well prepared to receive the Sacraments. Thank you.
PARISH MISSION:
Evening of Sunday 2 October – Evening of Wednesday 5 October 2022
(Introduction to the Mission will be at our Vigil Mass on 1 October and morning Masses on 2 October)
THEME OF MISSION: ‘OUR PARISH, GROWING IN FAITH TOGETHER’
I am delighted to inform you that our Parish Mission will commence on the evening of Sunday 2 October, having been ‘launched’ at our Vigil Mass on Saturday 1 October, and at our Sunday morning Masses on 2 October. The Mission will finish on the evening of Wednesday 5 October.
In choosing suitable dates for our Parish Mission, it was considered particularly relevant to have it in the Month of Mission, the month in which all of us are asked to refresh ourselves on the mission to which we are called as baptised Catholics, and to look at ways in which we can live out our mission responsibility in our own parish. It was also considered appropriate to incorporate the Feast of St Therese of Lisieux (1 Oct), Patroness of Missions, and the Feast of St Francis of Assisi (4 Oct), who reformed his life and surrendered it to the providence and will of God. October, as you know, is also a special month of devotion to Our Lady and, in particular, to the Rosary.
I am grateful to our Parish Faith Formation Working Group who are advising on and assisting with the preparations for the Mission. Further information will be published in next Sunday’s newsletter.
In the meantime, I ask that you prepare your hearts and minds for these special days of renewal in our parish by praying our Parish Prayer:
God our Father, pour forth Your Holy Spirit on our parish.
Guide us in Your ways, grant us Your vision. Be our wisdom.
Open our hearts and minds to Your Holy Word,
strengthen us with the Holy Eucharist, our food for the journey.
Help us to be people of prayer, trusting in Your constant presence in the challenges that we face.
With Your help, may our parish always be a place where
Your love is known, Your light shines and our parish families grow together in faith and mission.
We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
St Patrick, pray for us.
SEASON OF CREATION: 1 SEPTEMBER – 4 OCTOBER (FEAST OF ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI):
THEME FOR 2022: LISTEN TO THE VOICE OF CREATION:
The Symbol for the Season is the burning bush. In the Book of Exodus story of the burning bush, the flame of God’s Spirit, reveals God’s presence. This holy fire affirms that God heard the cries of all who suffered and promised to be with all who followed in faith to deliverance from injustice. Guided by God’s Spirit, let us ‘listen to the voice of creation’ this month and open our hearts and minds to all that the Season promotes for the care of all God’s creation, the care of the world around us.
