Parish Newsletter for Sunday 13th November 2022

NOVEMBER – MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS

SUNDAY 13 NOVEMBER 2022
THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
GOSPEL: ST LUKE 21:5-19

St Luke’s Gospel passage today reminds us of the finite nature of all that we plan for and build up on our earthly journey, as opposed to the infinite nature of the destiny that God has planned for all of us. Jesus asks us to prepare and be ready for that day so that, when the time comes, God will not be a stranger to us: we will know Him intimately through prayer, through the sacraments and through witnessing to the values of the Gospel in our day to day lives.

The resistance and obstacles that Jesus said His followers would encounter have not lost their relevance and, in a world full of distractions, it isn’t always easy for us to allow the message of the Gospel to permeate everything we say and do. Making choices that are Christ-centred often takes courage, especially in the face of opposition, but Jesus reassures us:
“Your endurance will win you your lives” (Luke 21:19)

UPCOMING PROJECT:

I am delighted to report that, with planning permission from Donegal Co Council in place, diocesan approval in place and all the preliminary and planning work complete, we are now in a position to proceed with the indoor-toilet project at our church. A copy of the Plan for the indoor-toilet facility is available for you to see on the noticeboard at the back of the church. It is intended that work will commence this week. While this project is being undertaken, the side door (next to the graveyard) will be out of use. I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

I wish to record my sincere appreciation to Mr John Masterson for his expertise and direction. It provides great peace of mind, knowing that care and attention is being given to all the necessary aspects and details.

LEARNING ABOUT THE MASS’ CORNER:

QUMEN: I was listening really well at Mass last Sunday because it was my Gran’s anniversary – she was two years dead and mum said the priest would be praying for her, during the Prayer of the Faithful.

KATH: What’s Prayer of the Faithful?

QUMEN: Well, after the Creed, about five or six different prayer intentions are read out by the person who did the Readings. On Sunday, there was a prayer for Pope Francis and everyone who leads us in our faith. There was a prayer for peace in the world. There was a prayer for the sick and then there was a short time of silence when we could all remember our own prayer intentions. After each prayer the Reader said, “Lord hear us” and we all answered “Lord graciously hear us”. Then the priest said the prayer for people who have died, and that’s when I heard my Gran’s name called out. It felt very special.

KATH: That was nice. I’m sure it made your mum happy.

KATH & QUMEN: Maybe when we’re old enough to read, we’ll be up at the sanctuary in the church leading the Prayer of the Faithful!

Do This In Memory:

So, next week, boys and girls, we have our Do This In Memory Mass. I am very much looking forward to you joining me and to your participation in our Mass. As you know, in November, we remember in a very special way our family members, neighbours and friends who have died. To help us in praying for the dead at our Mass, you are asked to bring along a fallen leaf. There is no shortage of fallen leaves these days. You will be asked to place it at the special Prayer Corner in our church for remembering the dead.
Your special candle will burn during our Mass.
I hope some of you have set up a special Prayer Corner, a Sacred Space, in your house, to help you and your family pray for your loved ones who have died.
‘Eternal rest grant on to them, O Lord. May they rest in peace.’
