NOVEMBER – MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS

SUNDAY 20 NOVEMBER 2022

FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING

The Church concludes the liturgical year today, with the celebration of the kingship of Jesus. St Luke’s Gospel passage of the Crucifixion, that we hear today, depicts Jesus as the Servant King. Powerless on the cross at human level, having suffered an incredible ordeal of pain and humiliation, we are told that He reached out at the same time, in love, to the ‘criminal’ beside him, with a triumphant and powerful message of mercy, forgiveness, joy and hope: “Indeed I promise you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43.
Jesus surrendered Himself in complete trust to the love and power of God the Father. With Him as our model, we pray that today will mark a new beginning for all of us in allowing God to rule our hearts and minds and permeate everything we do and say.

Today we welcome to our ‘Do This In Memory’ 11.00am Mass the children who are due to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in 2023. We welcome their parents / guardians and families.

The children have been asked to bring a fallen leaf, which will be placed at our special November Prayer Corner, reminding us that November is a special month of prayer for those who have died.
The children’s candles will burn at the sanctuary during Mass.

Special thanks to the parents who have helped prepare for our Mass, to those who are playing a special role in it today and, as always, to Louise and Patricia, who are very kindly helping to co-ordinate the DTIM programme. Thank you all for your work and commitment.

The parish community is asked to continue to remember the children and their families in prayer.

INDOOR-TOILET PROJECT:

A copy of the Plan for the indoor-toilet facility, which started this week, is available for you to see on the noticeboard at the back of the church. For the duration of the project, the side door (next to the graveyard) will be out of use. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

The new Church (Liturgical) year starts next Sunday, 27 November, with the First Sunday of Advent. In this upcoming year (Year A in the Liturgical Calendar), we will listen, most Sundays to the Gospel of St Matthew.
Matthew, one of the apostles, was a tax collector before answering Jesus’ call to discipleship. Not much is known about Matthew (also called “Levi”), but it is believed that his was the second of the Gospels to be written (after St Mark’s). Sometimes described as a bridge acting between the Old Testament and the New Testament, St Matthew’s Gospel is heavily flavoured with Old Testament and prophecies. His central theme is Promise and Fulfilment: Christ as the fulfilment of Scripture, the true, prophesied and promised Messiah, who builds on the foundations laid in the Old Testament to establish the Church (the kingdom of heaven on earth).

COFFEE MORNING – MURLOG NATIONAL SCHOOL:

The Parent/Guardian Association of Murlog NS is holding a Coffee Morning in aid of school funds this Friday, 25 November, from 10.00am -12.00noon, in the GP room of the school. Everyone is welcome and all support greatly appreciated.

SACRAMENTAL DATES 2023:

Confirmation: Saturday 11 March, at 11.00am. First Holy Communion: Saturday 13 May, at 11.00am.

LEARNING ABOUT THE MASS’ CORNER:

QUMEN: Did you see in Grapevine that this Sunday is a special day in the Church Calendar – it’s the Feast of Christ the King – we celebrate Jesus as a King at Mass today! And, it also says this is the last Sunday of the Church Year.

KATH: But sure how could that be? It’s not the end of the year till after Christmas, and we don’t want to skip Christmas!

QUMEN: My mum explained that there are different kind of years and, just like we have the calendar year and the school year, we also have a Church Year. She said it is sometimes called the Liturgical Year.
What’s more, she said that the start of the new Church Year is a very special time, called Advent, and it lasts four weeks. Advent will be starting next Sunday.

KATH: Why is Advent so special? Is Christmas not the special time in the Church, with the celebration of the birth of Baby Jesus?

QUMEN: Yes, but Advent, mum said, is four weeks of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Baby Jesus.

KATH AND QUMEN: It all makes sense, having a special time of preparation for something as wonderful as the celebration of the birth of Baby Jesus.

Do This In Memory:

Do This In Memory: Welcome, boys and girls, to our Do This In Memory Mass. I hope you have been using Thumb and Grapevine to help you prepare well for our Mass today. Today, you will be helping us in a very special way to pray for those who have died. Most of us know someone we loved who has died.

This is also a special day in the Church calendar. It is the last Sunday of the Church year and we celebrate Jesus as a king. Kath and Qumen have filled us in on this in our ‘Learning about the Mass’ corner.

Your special candle will burn during our Mass.
