SUNDAY 12th FEBRUARY 2023
SIXTH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME:
When Jesus taught the Beatitudes, He did not do so to ‘replace’ the Ten Commandments of God but, rather, to bring a deeper understanding and meaning to them, and to show their relevance to true discipleship in our day to day lives. Jesus teaches that ‘keeping the Commandments’ is not about outward appearances of piety or being seen by others to obey the law or do the right thing. It is not a ‘box-ticking’ exercise on keeping laws. Keeping the Commandments is about loving and serving God and neighbour in a way that reflects the teachings and the example of Jesus. If we do our best to follow and live out the teachings of the Beatitudes, we will fulfil the Commandments of God.

DO THIS IN MEMORY PROGRAMME:
Welcome to our ‘First Holy Communion’ children at our 11.00am Mass today. The children have been asked to draw a picture for today of something that, in their eyes, represents peace and happiness. Their creations will be put on display in the sanctuary of the church during the week. Many thanks, as always, to the co-ordinators, and it is really lovely also to have a group of willing parents to help us in our preparation.
CONFIRMATION PREPARATION – FOR ATTENTION OF PARENTS:
It is very important that you continue to support your child in preparation for the Sacrament by bringing him/her to one of our Masses each weekend. It is important for the children that they all have the opportunity to be familiar with our church and with the Mass. We look forward to welcoming Bishop McKeown, who will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation in St Patrick’s on Saturday 11 March, at 11.00am. We will have our Service of Light on Monday 27 February, at 7.00pm: please note this date, as full attendance will be required – full details will be published in next week’s newsletter.
PASTORAL LETTER – BISHOP McKEOWN:
A few weeks ago, at our Sunday Masses, I drew your attention to Bishop McKeown’s Pastoral Letter to the people of the parishes of the diocese. The Letter can be accessed on https://www.derrydiocese.org/pastoral-letter and it is also posted on our Facebook page. If anyone, perhaps someone who does not have access to internet, would like a printed copy of it, please let Lorna in the parish office know, and she will be happy to arrange for you to have a printed copy. I would ask that everyone take the time to read it. Feedback would be welcome – I would be happy to discuss its contents with you. Over the coming weeks/months you will be hearing progress reports as further meetings take place with groups from local parishes (including our own): in short, the overarching theme of the Pastoral Letter and of the gatherings that have taken place and will take place is, ‘how the priests and people of our parishes will hand on the faith to future generations, in a different model of Church’.
DERRY DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE TO LOURDES – 3 – 7 July 2023:

LIFFORD CLONLEIGH RESOURCE CENTRE presents “Ways to ensure good health for men and women” by The Pink Ladies Cancer Support Group tomorrow, Monday 13 February, at 12.00noon. Admission is Free. Everyone welcome.
LETTERKENNY HOSPITAL CAMPAIGN:
Following the ‘Day of Action’, a meeting will be held at Dillon’s Hotel, Letterkenny, this Thursday, 16 February, at 7.30pm, to elect / expand the Hospital Action Committee and to plan the Campaign going forward. All are welcome, to help form a wider organisation, especially representatives of staff and patients and public representatives. “If you care, be there. text 0876707002 for further information.”
Do This In Memory:
Welcome, boys and girls, to our Do This In Memory Mass today. I always look forward to or Do This In Memory Masses, as it is lovely for me and for the people of the parish to be able to support you in your preparation for the day when you will be able to receive Holy Communion.
I am looking forward to putting your Peace and Joy creations that you have done for today on display in the church. As we know, you are preparing these days to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, so your Peace and Joy creation is a good way of helping you to think of anybody with whom you might not be friends, or anyone you may have been unkind to – just think of the peace and joy it would bring to you and to them to be friends again!
‘LEARNING ABOUT THE MASS’ CORNER:
KATH: Last week, Qumen, you told me about the second part of the Eucharistic Prayer. Now tell me about the third part.
QUMEN: Well, Kath, the third part of the Eucharistic Prayer is the Consecration when, through the words and the actions of the priest, we remember what Jesus did at the Last Supper. This is when the bread and wine are consecrated into the Body and Blood of Jesus. It’s a very important part of the Mass.
KATH: Tell me about the Last Supper, Qumen. What happened at it?
QUMEN: The Last Supper, Kath, was the last and the most important meal that Jesus ever shared with His friends, the disciples. It was on the night before Jesus died. Jesus knew He was going to die, but He wanted to be with all His friends forever, in a very special way. So, He thanked God the Father for the gifts of bread and wine they were sharing at the table. Then, He lifted some of the bread, He blessed it and said to the disciples, ‘This is my Body.’ Then he lifted some of the wine they were sharing and blessed it, and said to them, ‘This is my Blood.’ And then, very importantly, He said to them, ‘Do this in memory of me.’ And that is what we do, to this day, when we have Mass! The Last Supper was really the first Mass.
KATH: I understand now, Qumen, why it is so important to go to Mass – to do what Jesus asked us to do and, when we are ready, to receive Jesus in Holy Communion.
KATH & QUMEN: We are so privileged to be receiving Holy Communion – the Body of Jesus. We really need to be so well prepared to receive Jesus in Holy Communion.
