SUNDAY 16th April 2023:
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
Gospel: St John 20:19-31
Divine Mercy Sunday is a relatively new addition to our liturgical calendar. Celebrated on the Octave (eighth day) of Easter, the feast was established by Pope John Paul II in 2000, on the day that he canonised Saint Faustina.
On Divine Mercy Sunday we listen to St John’s account of the Gospel story known as “Doubting Thomas,” in which we hear of Christ’s mercy towards the humbled apostle, who did not believe until he had seen and touched. Jesus did not dismiss or abandon Thomas in his doubts. His reaction to Thomas affirms our faith in His enduring love and mercy, despite our human weaknesses and failures.
