Parish Newsletter for Sunday 23rd April 2023

SUNDAY 23rd April 2023:

‘Did not our hearts burn within us as He talked to us on the road
and explained the scriptures to us?’ (Luke 24:32)

In St Luke’s Gospel today we listen to the familiar account of the two disciples’ encounter with Jesus on the road to Emmaus. The disciples discerned a burning in their hearts after their encounter with the Risen Lord and, in the true spirit of Jesus’ mission, went to spread the Good News to others.

We ask the Risen Lord today to open our eyes and hearts to the Scriptures and, through them, to reveal Himself to us. We ask also that our hunger for the Eucharist will be such that we may always recognise its centrality to all that we believe as Catholics and to an ever-growing relationship with Jesus.

We pray this weekend for those from our diocese who are discerning their vocational call to serve as a priest or in Religious life that, through their encounter with Jesus in Scripture and in the Eucharist, they may be guided by the Holy Spirit in their vocational path. We ask God’s blessing particularly on those from our diocese who are attending a Vocations retreat in Drumalis Retreat Centre, Larne, this weekend.

Hello, boys and girls. Welcome to our Do This In Memory Mass.
Like yourselves, Kath and Qumen are getting very excited that they will soon receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Qumen is giving Kath some good advice about the Sacrament of Confessions.

LEARNING ABOUT THE MASS’ CORNER:

QUMEN: We’re nearly ready to receive First Holy Communion, Kath. Can you believe!

KATH: I’m getting very excited now, Qumen. Only three weeks to go and we’ll be receiving our THIRD sacrament – I don’t remember my Baptism at all, but First Confessions this week felt really special. I don’t think I’ll do bad things any more – I want to stay friends with Jesus!

QUMEN: Kath, I don’t think you or I will manage to be good all the time – we’re bound to forget sometimes, but we know that Jesus loves us and, as long as we try to do our best, and be sorry for when we don’t get it right, He will always forgive us. He wants us to be His friends. And remember, we received First Confessions but my mum goes to Confessions every month and so I can do that too. Every time we go to Confessions, we renew our special friendship with Jesus and, as you say, Kath, that feels very special.
