Parish Newsletter for Sunday 25th June 2023

SUNDAY 25th June 2023:

TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME:

DO NOT BE AFRAID (Gospel: St Matthew 10:26-33)
‘Do not be afraid’ is the most often repeated command of Jesus to His disciples. These words in today’s Gospel are set in the context of preparing the disciples for the future, when it will be their responsibility to carry on the work of Jesus, after His earthly life. His words are based on the unchanging character, power and love of God, who is Love, so Jesus can say these words with conviction.
We too are called to fearless discipleship, with confidence in the message of Jesus, even in the face of opposition and in times of doubt and uncertainty.

GRAVEYARD COLLECTION:

Sincere thanks for your great generosity to the collection taken up at the Blessing of the Graves ceremony. The collection amounted to €2960.03 and £326 (stg). Thank you also to the donor of an online payment of €200 this week towards the cost of the upkeep of the graveyard (included in the €2,960 figure). This collection is a great help to the upkeep costs. Thank you! Again, I want to pay tribute to the great team of men who keep our grounds so well all year round and to all of you, for keeping your graves so well. We pray for all those buried in our graveyards: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord: may they rest in peace.

PARISH PILGRIMAGE TO KNOCK:

SATURDAY 12 AUGUST 2023

Our Parish Faith Formation Working Group is organising our second annual parish day-pilgrimage to Knock, taking place on Saturday 12 August. Luxury coach to and from Knock with Ayton Travel, who looked after us all so well last year. The bus will leave the church car park at 7.30am. Fr Colm will celebrate Mass in the Apparition Chapel at 12.30pm.
To book the bus, please contact James on 085 8767999 or Louise on 086 0567455. Cost: €25 per person, covering bus and evening meal.
We had a lovely pilgrimage last year and it is hoped that many parishioners will take up the opportunity again this year for a special day of prayer at Our Lady of Knock Shrine. If you weren’t able to join us last year, you would be most welcome to join us this year. The programme of activities is available on the poster at the back of the church and on the flyers in the church. Our Lady of Knock, pray for us.

DERRY DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE TO LOURDES:

For anyone travelling on this year’s pilgrimage, there will be an Information Evening and ticket distribution this Tuesday, 27 June, at 7.30pm in the Everglades Hotel. If you are unable to attend, please notify the Pilgrimage Office on 048 7126 0293 or email derrypilgrim@outlook.com

COMMUNITY FUSION DAY:

Lifford Clonleigh Resource Centre, this Friday, 30 June, 2pm – 5pm. This Day is an opportunity to meet people who are new to the parish, sample international foods, enjoy music, dance and cultural activities with Irish and International groups. Everyone is very welcome! Please call in.

ALTAR SERVERS:

If you have a child in 3rd Class up to 6th Class who would like to become an Altar Server, please let me know over the summer. Training will be provided before the start of September. I very much look forward to having Altar Servers at our Masses again, starting in September.

Please remember to keep in your prayers this week, Deacon Shaun Doherty, as he makes his final preparations for ordination to priesthood in St Eugene’s Cathedral, Derry, next Sunday afternoon, 2 July. Shaun studied for priesthood in Rome and, following his ordination, will receive an appointment as a priest of the diocese in the clerical changes this summer.
St John Vianney, pray for him.

SUMMER HOLIDAYS!

As the school holidays begin and holiday season starts, we hope that all our school-children and young people will enjoy a happy and safe break.

Thank you to our teachers and all the staff in our schools – we hope you too will enjoy a well-earned holiday.

To all who are going on holidays or out and about this summer, please take care and please travel with attention when walking, cycling or driving. Have a lovely time, wherever you are!

PRAYER
Holy Spirit, whose guiding presence we find wherever we go,
Protect all who travel this summer and bring them safely to their journey’s end.
Protect our children and young people, surround them with Your loving care,
and help them to recognise danger.
This we ask through Christ our Lord, Amen.
