Parish Newsletter for Sunday 8th October 2023

SUNDAY 8th October 2023:

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME

The Parable of the Tenants: Keep Jesus as the Cornerstone of our family lives and homes.

OCTOBER – MONTH OF MISSION

For his Message for Mission Sunday (22 October), Pope Francis has chosen the theme, “Hearts on Fire, Feet on the Move”, inspired by the story in the Gospel of St Luke (24:13-35) of the first appearance of Jesus to two of His disciples, after His crucifixion and discovery of the empty tomb.
“The two disciples were confused and dismayed, but their encounter with Christ in the Word and in the breaking of the bread sparked in them the enthusiastic desire to set out again towards Jerusalem and proclaim that the Lord had truly risen. In the Gospel account, we perceive this change in the disciples through a few revealing images: their hearts burned within them as they heard the Scriptures explained by Jesus, their eyes were opened as they recognised him and, ultimately, their feet set out on the way.” As the missionaries of our time, we pray that our encounter with Jesus in Scripture, in the Eucharist and in the daily journey of our lives will reflect the disciples’ fresh desire to spread the Gospel. WELL DONE to the boys and girls who enrolled for the preparation programme, Do This In Memory, at our 11.00am Mass last Sunday, for undertaking your responsibilities so enthusiastically!
I hope you have had a chance to start reading through Thumb and, with the help of your parents, to look at the Grapevine, which will help you prepare for the next Do This in Memory Mass. Thank you also to all the parents for your support and co-operation and to the parish community for your prayerful support of the children as they prepare for this important step in their young lives.
The next Do This In Memory Mass will be on Sunday 22 October (Mission Sunday). We hope, however, to see you at Mass every Sunday! Thank you to Louise and Patricia for all their help with the programme and to the parents who will help in the weeks and months ahead. Your help is much appreciated.

THANK YOU to everyone who came along to our Jubilee Year meeting last Monday night. Thank you for all the ideas and suggestions that you shared and for your enthusiasm for the Jubilee year celebrations in our parish. Thank you also to those who were unable to attend but sent apologies and/or ideas.
Our next step is to form a Jubilee committee, whose initial role will be to give consideration to the practicalities and implementation of the ideas and suggestions brought forward on Monday night and, then, to assist in drawing up a suitable calendar of events for 2024.
If you would like to be part of the Jubilee committee, please come along to a meeting on Monday 23 October, at 7.30pm, in Murlog school. Remember, this is your Jubilee, your double-celebration, and the opportunity to be part of the Jubilee committee is open to everyone in the parish.

THANK YOU to those who have requested an envelope box for the coming year. If anyone else would like to receive an envelope box, please let Lorna in the parish office, or myself, know. Also, if you are already an envelope-box contributor and have not received your envelopes, please let us know. Thank you!

ANAM CARA DONEGAL is holding it’s monthly Parent Evening for bereaved parents this Thursday, 12 October, at 7.15pm, in the Raddison Blu Hotel, Letterkenny. October is a month of special devotion to Our Lady and, in particular, to praying the Rosary. You are encouraged to make special effort to recite the Family Rosary in your homes during this month. Parents, in particular, are encouraged to teach and pray the Rosary with their children.
In this Month of October, I encourage as many people as possible to come along and join our Rosary Group to pray the Rosary, twenty minutes before our morning Masses.

PRISONS WEEK, 8 – 14 October:

Prisons Week aims to encourage prayer and awareness of the needs of prisoners and their families, victims of offenders, victims’ families, prison staff and all those who care.
Two of the priests in our diocese, Fr Kevin Mulhern and Fr Frank O’Hagan, serve as Chaplains to Magilligan Prison. They have supported the Creative Writing Group in Magilligan prison in designing a poster and postcards for Prisons Week and in creating a booklet of Letters from Prisoners. This material is available at the back of our church.
We thank God for the ministry of all prison chaplains and we ask His continued blessings on them in the challenging work that they do, with such dedication, throughout the year.

Loving God, we ask You to shine Your light on all those whose lives are changed, some forever,
through crime and imprisonment: prisoners, prisoners’ families, victims, victims’ families.
Be near them in their darkest days. May they be assured of Your love for them.
Lord God, who suffered and died for us on the cross,
Help us to forgive one another and to know and practice justice and peace,
As taught to us through Your example. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
