Parish Newsletter for Sunday 29th October 2023

SUNDAY 29th October 2023:

THIRTIETH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME
To love God and love our neighbour is the invitation, but also the challenge, that Jesus puts to us. Love of God and love of neighbour is at the heart of the message of the Gospel.
Great and loving God,
Your love for us is beyond what we can grasp with our minds and hearts.
Let such great love for all awaken in us a true love of you
and lead to authentic service of our neighbour.
We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

ALL SAINTS DAY is on Wednesday of this week and is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass in St Patrick’s is at 10.00am. ALL SOULS DAY is not a Holy Day of Obligation but many people like to attend Mass. Our Masses are at 10.00am and 7.00pm. At the 7.00pm Mass we will remember in a particular way our parishioners who have died in the past year and those who have been buried in our graveyard in the past year. During this Mass, candles will burn in memory of each of the deceased (which a family member can then take home). You are asked to let people who have buried loved ones in the past year know about this Mass.

CHANGE OF SUNDAY MORNING MASS SCHEDULE:

Please not that, with effect from next Sunday, 5 November, the 9.00am and 11.00am Masses
will be replaced by a 10.00am Mass.

REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER:

From 2 November, our Liturgy Working Group will have in place a Sacred Space in our church for the month, at which you are invited to write the names of your deceased loved ones. Throughout the month, they will be remembered at all our Masses. You are also invited to light a candle in memory of your loved ones.

DO THIS IN MEMORY Programme:

Thank you to all the children and their families – it was lovely to see you all at our Do This In Memory Mass last Sunday, which was a very special occasion.

BOYAGH NATIONAL SCHOOL PREMISES, PORTHALL:

I am delighted to report that, as a parish, we will soon be in a position to rent out the Boyagh School premises to interested parties for community activities. We are currently nearing the end of our negotiations with the Department of Education.

Lifford Men’s Shed has already expressed interest in renting the premises, to accommodate its increasing needs. The Men’s Shed is organising a meeting in the school for this Wednesday evening, 1 November, at 7.30 pm. I invite any / all other interested parties, who may be able to use the school premises for their activities, to come along to the meeting on Wednesday evening. I very much look forward to having the school used as a community building. Everyone is welcome to the meeting, to see the premises as they are at present and explore the possibilities for future use to enhance the community.

The responsibilities and obligations of the parish, as owner of the property, and those of interested parties, will be clarified at the meeting, for the mutual benefit of tenants and parish.

Sincere thanks to those who have given of their time to the maintenance and upkeep of the grounds and premises. Your work is very much appreciated.

JUBILEE 24:

THANK YOU to all who attended the meeting on Monday evening of the proposed Jubilee 24 working group. Thank you also to those who were unable to attend but sent through word that they will help out in whatever way they can.

Just to update you all, the main areas we are looking to host and develop are:

• Liturgies to celebrate the actual anniversaries.
• Schools to be involved in preparing art / displays for use in the church as well as special assemblies.
• Formation of a ‘History Group’ to get as much information as we can.
• A parish Sports day in the summer as well as a parish family / barbecue day.
• Building an outdoor Way of the Stations of the Cross.
• Publishing and promoting the jubilee through the local media eg: radio and newspapers.

We will gather again at the end of November to see where we begin. Meanwhile, if there is anyone else who would like to be involved in some way, or if there are any other ideas we can put in place, please let me know.
