RETIRED PRIESTS’ COLLECTION:

This annual collection will be taken up at our Masses next weekend (14/15 September). As the number of retired priests in the diocese increases (currently 27), this collection is a small but vital element of the funds needed to meet increasing sustenance costs each year. Your generosity will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

SEASON OF CREATION 1 SEPTEMBER – 4 OCTOBER:
Theme: To Hope and Act with Creation.” (cf Rom 8:22).

As we enter the second week of the Season of Creation the Gospel text today invites each of us to explore how to be open to community, touch and change:
The community notices the plight of the deaf man who had an impediment in his speech and they bring him to Jesus for healing. The Season of Creation encourages local communities to become aware of the cry of the earth and to act on its behalf – in the same way as this man was cared for by the community.
Jesus healed the man: He touched him, spoke with him and drew him out of isolation – actions full of tenderness and symbolism. In this encounter with Jesus, the deaf man and, indeed, the community, experienced a profound interior conversion.
The Gospel invites interior conversion. A change of heart is what Pope Francis calls for today in our relationship with creation: without a change from within, there will be no enduring change in our lifestyle but, “to love God we must love what God loves.” In St Mark’s Gospel it was the community who brought the deaf man for healing: they were open to and wanted change.
In this Season of Creation, are we willing to take action that shows we care for our environment? What kind of things do we notice that could be done in our community that would make a difference? What practical changes could we be part of making, as individuals and as parish community?
In this Season of Creation, St Francis of Assisi, pray for us.

The September edition of The Net is available at the doors of our church. As always, it contains a wide range of interesting articles, news-stories, interviews and photographs. It is also available online.

RELICS OF ST BERNADETTE:

We look forward to the visit of the Relics of St Bernadette of Lourdes next month, in St Eugene’s Cathedral, Derry, on 13 and 14 October. This very first pilgrimage of the Relics of St Bernadette through Ireland has already begun, and the relics are journeying through every diocese in the country during these two months of September and October. This once-in-a-lifetime event will provide an opportunity for people to experience the special gifts and charisms of Lourdes in their own diocese. Full details of the itinerary for this very special event will be published shortly. St Bernadette, pray for us.

WE PRAY GOD’S BLESSING on the children and staff of our three schools as they settle into the new school year, remembering especially those who are just starting school for the first time:

God of all wisdom,
we praise You for gifting children with curiosity and learning.
Give to all school-children, teachers, and assistant staff a clear sense of Your presence.
May they feel that presence throughout this school year.
Guide their choices, their quest for knowledge, and their relationships.
Most of all, guide all in the knowledge of Your enduring love.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
