Thought for the Week – Sunday 26th April 2020

THE ROAD TO EMMAUS (Luke 24:13-35)

The familiar Gospel story of the two disciples’ encounter with Jesus on the road to Emmaus reminds us that it is through Scripture and the Eucharist that we gain a deeper understanding and recognition of the presence of Jesus in our lives. The disciples felt their world was ‘falling apart’, all their hopes and plans having come to a halt, with Jesus gone from their lives.
Many of us can identify with their feelings of desperation in these days of pandemic. We pray today that we will all be renewed in hope, in the knowledge that Jesus is with us on our journey, especially in our darkest moments.

Risen Lord, open our ears and eyes so that our hearts may burn within us
at the sound of Your Word, in which You reveal Yourself to us.
The disciples recognised You in the breaking of bread
Help us to recognise our need for the great gift of the Holy Eucharist on our journey
so that, spiritually nourished, we will come to know and love You more and more.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
