SUNDAY 13 FEBRUARY 2022
SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C)
GOSPEL: ST LUKE 6:17, 20-26 JESUS TEACHES THE BEATITUDES
Today we listen to St Luke’s account of Jesus teaching the Beatitudes (blessings). The Gospels of the four evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, are inspired words, and it is not by chance that Luke tells us, “Jesus stopped at a piece of level ground” (Vs 17) and ‘fixed his eyes on his disciples’ (Vs 20) to teach the Beatitudes. These words tell us that Jesus wanted to demonstrate He was close to His disciples and had something very important to tell them. The Beatitudes bring a deeper understanding and meaning to the Ten Commandments. They address the attitudes necessary to live out the Commandments (we could say, the attitudes of the Beatitudes!). Jesus taught the Beatitudes at the beginning of His ministry and these teachings were mirrored in His own life. Jesus teaches us that ‘keeping the Commandments’ is not about keeping up external appearances of piety or being seen by others to keep within the law. Keeping the Commandments is about an internal desire and willingness to love and serve God and our neighbour, in a way that reflects the teachings and example of Jesus. If we do our best to follow and live the teachings of the Beatitudes, we will fulfil the Commandments of God.

St Valentine’s Day is celebrated tomorrow, Monday 14 February.
The following Valentine Prayer is taken from the Family Prayer Book:
I said a Valentine prayer for you and asked the Lord above
To fill your heart and bless your soul with the precious gift of love.
I asked him for sincere love, the kind that’s meant to stay,
Just like the generous love You give to those You touch each day.
I prayed for love from family and for every cherished friend,
Then I asked the Lord to give you His love that knows no end.
St Valentine, pray for us.

PARISH PRAYER:
Please continue to pray our Parish Prayer:
God our Father, pour forth Your Holy Spirit on our parish.
Guide us in Your ways, grant us Your vision.
Be our wisdom.
Open our hearts and minds to Your Holy Word,
strengthen us with the Holy Eucharist, our food for the journey.
Help us to be people of prayer, trusting in Your constant presence in the challenges that we face.
With Your help, may our parish always be a place where Your love is known, Your light shines
and our parish families grow together in faith and mission. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
St Patrick, pray for us.
