Parish Newsletter for Sunday 23rd July 2023

SUNDAY 23rd July 2023:

SUNDAY 23 JULY 2023
SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Jesus uses several images to explain the kingdom of God, to help us to grasp that which is really beyond complete human comprehension. Jesus inaugurated God’s kingdom, the reign of God, on earth. The kingdom could be described as the kind of world that God, through Jesus, wants to see realised among us here on earth, where His values prevail. God’s values include truth, love, peace, compassion, justice, solidarity with each other and a deep respect for the dignity of every other person. A particular plea from today’s Gospel is to be non-judgemental in our encounters with others.

Sunday 23 July – Third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly:

Pope Francis chose as this year’s theme, “His mercy is from age to age” (Lk 1:50) which, he recalled in his Message, takes us back to the joyful meeting between the young Mary and her elderly cousin, Elizabeth (Lk 1:39-56). The Holy Spirit had descended upon Elizabeth and had, earlier, descended upon Mary, prompting her to respond with the Magnificat, in which she proclaimed that the Lord’s mercy is from generation to generation. That same Spirit, the Pope observes in the Message, “blesses and accompanies every fruitful encounter between different generations: between grandparents and grandchildren, between young and old.” The Pope expressed the delight that young people can offer older generations: “God wants young people to bring joy to the hearts of the elderly, as Mary did to Elizabeth, and gain wisdom from their experiences.” Friendship with an older person, he said, can help the young “to see life not only in terms of the present and realise that not everything depends on them and their abilities.” For the elderly, on the other hand, he noted, the presence of a young person in their lives “can give them hope that their experience will not be lost and that their dreams can find fulfilment.”

The Feast Day of Sts Joachim and Anne, parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus, is celebrated this Wednesday (26 July). We pray for the intentions of all grandparents: Sts Joachim & Anne, pray for them.
