Friday of this week, 4 August, is the Feast Day of St John Vianney, Patron Saint of priests. John Vianney was known as the “Curé d’Ars.” Considered a man of few gifts, he served in the village of Ars, near his hometown, for the majority of his priestly ministry. He was noted for his dedication to the poor, his prayer-life and devotion to the Eucharist, his commitment to the Sacrament of Confession and for founding La Providence, an orphanage for girls. He lived a life of poverty. Modelling Jesus’ teachings that we hear in today’s Gospel on the treasures of the kingdom, John Vianney was quoted by Pope John XXIII to have lived a life that was “almost completely detached from the changeable, perishable goods of this world, and his spirit was free and unencumbered by impediments of this kind…” He died on 4 August 1859, aged 73; he was canonised in 1925 by Pope Pius XI. In 1929, the same pope proclaimed him the “heavenly patron of all parish priests throughout the world.”
St John Vianney is, for all of us today, an example of how God works wonderfully through those who dedicate their lives to Him and who seek to do His will. We pray, through the intercession of St John Vianney, for all priests and for more vocations to the priesthood and Religious life. St John Vianney, pray for us.
