O C T O B E R – MONTH OF MISSION:

‘TOGETHER WE CAN DO MORE’
(Theme for Mission Sunday 2020, which we celebrate on Sunday, 18 October)

“Understanding what God is saying to us at this time of pandemic represents a challenge for the Church’s mission. Illness, suffering, fear and isolation challenge us. The poverty of those who die alone, the abandoned, those who have lost their jobs and income, the homeless and those who lack food challenge us. Being forced to observe social distancing and to stay at home invites us to rediscover that we need social relationships as well as our communal relationship with God…..And prayer, in which God touches and moves our hearts, should make us ever more open to the need of our brothers and sisters for dignity and freedom, as well as our responsibility to care for all creation. The impossibility of gathering as a Church to celebrate the Eucharist has led us to share the experience of the many Christian communities that cannot celebrate Mass every Sunday. In all of this, God’s question: “Whom shall I send?” is addressed once more to us and awaits a generous and convincing response: “Here am I, send me!” (Is 6:8).” From Pope Francis’ Message for Mission Sunday 2020 ‘Here am I, send me’. The full text of the Pope’s Message can be seen on the World Missions Ireland website, www.wmi.ie

PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH (MISSION SUNDAY) COLLECTION:

There is a special envelope in your box for this collection for thisSunday. The proceeds of the Mission Sunday collection are channelled through World Missions Ireland, which is the official support organisation for the overseas mission of the Irish Catholic Church, bringing the prayers, solidarity and financial help of the Church in Ireland to Christian communities in other parts of the world.
St Thérèse of Lisieux, pray for us. St Francis Xavier, pray for us.

Quotes of St Thérèse of Lisieux, Patron Saint of Missions. St Thérèse, pray for us:

“Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice,
here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.”
“God does not so much look at the greatness of our actions, or even at their difficulty,
as at the love with which we do them.”
“Kindness is my only guiding star. In its light, I sail a straight route,
I have my motto written on my sail: ‘To live in love.’”
“My whole strength lies in prayer and sacrifice;
these are my invincible arms; they can move hearts far better than words.”
Quotes of St Thérèse of Lisieux, Patron Saint of Missions. St Thérèse, pray for us.

REMEMBERING OUR DEAD, NOVEMBER 2020

November, as we know, is Month of the Holy Souls, a month in which we remember our deceased family members, friends and all who are buried in our graveyards in a very special way. In our parish, we will remember our dead in a variety of ways during November, but I wish to draw your attention to a special Mass, on Monday 2 November, All Souls Day, at 7.00pm, which I will celebrate for those in our parish who have died in the past year. If you have a family member who has died since 1 November 2019, whom you would like remembered and prayed for at this Mass, please contact Lorna in the Parish Office – Tel 074 9142001 or email clonleighparish@derrydiocese.org – by Thursday 29 October at latest, with the name of your loved one. During this Mass, a candle will be lit in memory of your deceased loved one. Each name will be read out at the Mass and remembered in prayer.

Unfortunately, even if the health authorities allow our churches to be open for public worship at that time, the church will be closed for this Mass, to avoid large numbers gathering together and for everyone’s safety. While this is disappointing and regrettable, the Mass will of course be Live on our parish webcam and on the speakers outside the church, where you can listen from your car (or possibly from your family grave, if it is safe to do so – depending on the weather). You can pick up the candle of your loved one from the church afterwards, at your convenience.

Given that some parishioners will have loved ones buried in the graveyards of neighbouring parishes, a co-ordinated approach to the November Services for the Dead has been taken. In our neighbouring parishes the dates and times are: Wed 4 November: Sion Mills, 7.00pm; Thurs 5 November: Leckpatrick, 7.30pm; Sun 8 November: Camus, 5.00pm; Sun 15 November: Melmount, 5.00pm.

OCTOBER is a month of special devotion to Our Lady and, in particular, to praying the Rosary. The Rosary invites us to reflect on the great mysteries of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, whose Mother, Mary, said ‘Yes’ to God’s will and, in so doing, became a model in faith for all of us. You are encouraged to join me through our parish webcam for the 12.00noon Rosary each day, Monday – Friday. If this does not suit you, you are asked to make special effort to recite the Family Rosary in your homes during this month. Parents, in particular, are encouraged to teach and pray the Rosary, or a decade of the Rosary, with their children.

Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us.

FIVE FINGER PRAYER in our Schools:

The children in our three schools are supporting Month of Mission this month by practising the Five Finger Prayer, as taught by Pope Francis. If you are the parent, sibling, grandparent or friend of a child or children of any of the schools, ask them to teach you about the Five Finger Prayer!
Each class is also busy preparing some wonderful creations on the theme of Mission, which will be displayed on the sanctuary of the church next Sunday, Mission Sunday. We very much look forward to seeing them!

PRAYER FOR OUR PROTECTION IN THIS TIME OF PANDEMIC:

In these increasingly worrying and uncertain times for everyone, we pray God’s protection for ourselves, our families, our parish community, our school communities, and those who are lonely or anxious. We particularly remember those from our parish who are sick or concerned about their health. We pray too for all frontline workers, all who help to provide essential services and all who place their own wellbeing at risk in the service of others:

From Saint Patrick’s Breastplate

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me.
