Parish Newsletter for Sunday 3rd July 2022

SUNDAY 3rd July 2022:

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C)
“Carry no purse, no haversack, no sandals” Luke 10:4

Many of us can probably identify with gathering up, along life’s journey, things we think we need to make our lives better, or taking too many things with us in our suitcases when travelling. Jesus asks instead that we carry, deep within us, something with no weight – the ‘inner peace’ that He offers. The inner peace of Jesus comes from placing our baggage in His hands, with trust in God that He knows, and will supply our real needs.
We think today about the things that might be weighing us down in life – perhaps we see our security as being material possessions, perhaps we see it as power, perhaps we are holding on to grudges or ill-feelings, perhaps we begrudge what others have. We pray today:

God of Love and Abundance, I come before You today,
placing all situations, worries, and concerns in Your hands.
I ask that You replace them with Your unwavering peace,
the gift of inner peace, that You alone can bring to my heart. Amen.

What did the people of the Diocese of Derry say in the synodal conversations?

A brief summary of the predominant themes that emerged,
according to the reports submitted by the parishes of our diocese:

Working together for a new Church….there is recognition of the need for a new model of Church which may require a certain mind-shift in all of us.

Church-inspired positivity….parishioners are passionate about their faith and the Church and desire a more ministry-rich Church.

Exclusion….Some people experience frustration because they genuinely want to be part of the faith community. People hope that the Church will be more merciful and inclusive.

Empowering Laity….Personal invitation was seen as key to participation and co-responsibility. Formation and training seen as essential to building confidence in the laity.

Communication….the Church must learn to speak the message of Jesus into the secular age in a relatable manner, so that it can change hearts and minds.

A Church fit for the margins….The Church must make concentrated efforts to reach out to those on the margins and, in particular, to those who feel a sense of unworthiness.

Lack of practice among younger generations….Concern expressed about the lack of practice in the 20-45 years bracket, indifference and disconnection. A need to ensure these members of our faith communities are encouraged to take part in the next steps of the synodal process.

Church-wide unity….People expressed a desire for synodality in the Church – to ‘walk together’, guided by the Holy Spirit, and for the Church to honour people’s expectations about what the process can achieve.

For fuller detail, reports and information on the synodal process to date in the Catholic Church in Ireland, please pick up a copy of The Synodal Times at the back of our church.

Please pray our Parish Prayer:

God our Father, pour forth Your Holy Spirit on our parish. Guide us in Your ways, grant us Your vision.
Be our wisdom. Open our hearts and minds to Your Holy Word,
strengthen us with the Holy Eucharist, our food for the journey.
Help us to be people of prayer, trusting in Your constant presence in the challenges that we face.
With Your help, may our parish always be a place where Your love is known, Your light shines
and our parish families grow together in faith and mission. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
