SUNDAY 9th OCTOBER 2022
TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C):
Gospel: “Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they?” Luke 17:17
Only one leper – the Samaritan – returned to thank Jesus. He would indeed have been the one considered an outcast on two counts – his leprosy and his race. Perhaps the other nine thought that, as ‘one of God’s own’, they were somehow entitled to be cured by Jesus. We can easily become complacent, but we pray today for the grace never to take God’s loving, healing and enduring presence for granted but to thank Him each day for the blessings He bestows upon us.

THE SACRAMENTS OF RECONCILIATION AND FIRST HOLY COMMUNION IN 2023:
Dear Parent/Guardian, I ask that you come along to a meeting in Murlog school tomorrow night (Monday 10 October), at 7.30pm, so that, together, we can look through the Do This In Memory programme – the purpose of it, the content etc. The sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are a very important step in your child’s journey of faith and it is our joint duty to do our best to ensure that the children are fully prepared to receive the sacraments. For me, it is a privilege to be part of the ‘church / parish’ element of the support for the children but, in addition to the preparatory work that is done in our schools, ongoing support in the family home – from parents/guardians, grandparents and family members – is key to effectively bringing the children to full understanding of the gift of the sacraments. I very much look forward to meeting with you on Monday evening.
PARISH MISSION, ‘GROWING IN FAITH TOGETHER’ 2 – 5 OCTOBER – THANK YOU!
I wish to offer my congratulations and sincere thanks to each and every one of you for making our Parish Mission such a special occasion in the life of our parish. Thank you for your faithful support of it, each day. I am humbled to have had the privilege of walking with you through such special days of prayer, graces, inspiration and blessings in our parish. There was a renewed energy each day, which was wonderful to see, and a great spirit of faith community wanting to come to pray together. It was very special.
In one of the beautiful displays that the children of our three schools did for the Mission, you will have seen in the sanctuary the fabulous ‘flames of light’ that they created. There is no doubt that, with the power of the Holy Spirit, these flames of light burned in the heart of the parish and in all our hearts throughout our prayerful Mission days.
Many individuals and groups were involved in the various aspects of the planning for the Mission and on the actual days of the Mission: without naming anyone or any individual group, I want to say a genuine thank you, to one and all. May God bless you for your generosity of time, energy and commitment to our parish. I just want to say special thanks to: those who provided accommodation for Fr Eamonn and for Sr Therese; your hospitality and generosity was much appreciated; Murlog school for so willingly facilitating us in using their premises each evening for the workshops. It was a fantastic facility for us; those who so generously provided and erected the marquee, and the very welcome refreshments each morning. Thank you, as always, to Hugh, our sacristan, for his diligence.
In putting together the various liturgies, Fr Eamonn and Sr Therese chose Scripture as the foundation on which to build the theme for each day. They chose an ‘informal’ approach to the various liturgies and events, which seems to have worked well for all of us. On your behalf, I wish to thank them, for a job well done. They repeatedly remarked that they were truly inspired and encouraged by your welcome, your warmth, your engagement and your encouragement.
In thanking God for these days of renewal in our parish, it is my hope and prayer that our Parish Mission has been the stepping stone that perhaps we all needed to give us a fresh perspective on what it is to ‘grow in faith together’ in our parish into the future, in a changed and changing scene for the Church. I pray that, with the help of the Holy Spirit, the ‘flames of light’ that our Mission has stirred in our hearts will continue to burn, with enthusiasm, enabling us to embrace new horizons on our journey of ‘growing in faith together’, in the weeks, months and years ahead. God bless you all.
Thank you also for your generosity to the collection each evening. This collection will go towards the various costs of the Mission. The total of your contributions will be published next week.

Do This In Memory: Boys and girls, it’s just two weeks from today till our next Do This In Memory Mass. I hope that, with the help of your parents, you have been enjoying Thumb, and that you are now getting ready for the next Mass on 23 October with the help of the Grapevine that you received on Enrolment Sunday.
At the Mass on 23 October, you will each be given a candle with your name on it, to be lit at the sanctuary. That will then be your candle, which you will bring back to each Do This In Memory Mass.
You will see in the Grapevine that you are asked to bring a pair of Rosary Beads to Mass on 23 October. Your beads will be blessed during that Mass.
