Parish Newsletter for Sunday 23rd October 2022

SUNDAY 23rd OCTOBER 2022
THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (MISSION SUNDAY):

“You shall be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8) is the theme for this year’s Mission Sunday
On Mission Sunday each year, Catholics in every church worldwide are asked to unite and recommit themselves to the universal mission of the Church, through prayer, solidarity and financial support.

We tend to think of missionaries as priests and Religious who work abroad, in poor countries. There are few of us who do not know someone whom we describe as ‘a missionary’. We pray in a special way today for the many people from Ireland, and from our own locality, whose vocation has called them to serve in the Church’s missionary work abroad. We thank God for their witness.

Missionary work, however, is not confined to developing countries or, indeed, to other people. By virtue of our baptism, all of us are called to be missionaries – in our homes, our families, our neighbourhood, places of work, church and parish. Our missionary call asks us to bring Jesus and the values of the Gospel to all we encounter, through our actions and words, through caring for and supporting each other, reconciling, friendship, kindly deeds, generosity and justice – sharing the gift of faith that we have been given. Our call is very much reflected in this year’s theme for Mission Sunday: ‘You shall be my witnesses.’

PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH collection – There is a special envelope in your envelope box for it today. This annual collection is channelled through Missio Ireland, which is the official support organisation for the overseas mission of the Church. Taken up in all churches, it enables Missio Ireland to continue to financially support missionary activities that enable those less fortunate than ourselves to get to know Jesus. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated. Missio website: www.missio.ie
Saint Thérèse, Patroness of the Missions, pray for us.

We will welcome those who will be travelling for the weekend of celebrations and joining us at the 11.00am Mass, as well as musicians and the schoolchildren who will be singing. Do This In Memory Mass:

Today we welcome to our 11.00am Mass the children who are due to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in 2023, for our Do This In Memory Mass. We welcome their parents / guardians and families.

The children have been asked to bring Rosary beads, which will be blessed during this Mass. Also, each child will receive a candle at Mass today, with their name on it, which will be lit and will burn on the sanctuary during Mass. The candle should then be brought back to each Do This In Memory Mass.

Sincere thanks to the parents of the children for coming along to our Information Event in Murlog school on Tuesday evening. It was lovely to see you and to witness your interest in supporting the Do This In Memory programme. Thank you very much for your participation; I hope you found the evening useful. Sincere thanks to Louise and Patricia, who are helping to co-ordinate the programme, for their work and commitment. Thank you also to the parents who kindly volunteered their services.

Last but not least, we are very grateful to Murlog school for the use of their premises, which were ideal. Many thanks, as always, to the school caretaker, Noel, for his help and patience.

Meanwhile, Kath and Qumen will continue to keep you informed about the Mass in our ‘Learning about the Mass’ corner.

LEARNING ABOUT THE MASS’ CORNER:

KATH: There was real excitement in our house this morning, with everyone getting ready and out on time to go to the Do This In Memory Mass.

QUMEN: There’s ‘excitement’ in our house every Sunday – mum is always shouting that if we don’t hurry up we’ll be late for Mass! Our Sunday clothes are all laid out for us in our bedrooms every Saturday night.

KATH: Sunday clothes?

QUMEN: Yes, mum always says that when you are going somewhere special, you put on your best clothes to show that it is special. God’s house is very special.

KATH: Is that why the priest wears special clothes at Mass?

QUMEN: Yes. The clothes the priest wears are called vestments. Remember, the priest explained to us at our Opening of School Year Mass about the vestments he wears: first, he puts on a white tunic over his ordinary clothes – it is called an Alb. Then he puts on a long piece of coloured cloth, like a scarf, which is called a Stole. Then he puts on an outer garment called a Chasuble. And, he said, there’s different colours of Chasubles, for different occasions.

KATH: An Alb, a Stole and a Chasuble – it all sounds very special.

KATH AND QUMEN: But then, Mass is very special.
