THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
ST LUKE 19:1-10 JESUS STAYS AT THE HOUSE OF ZACCHAEUS, THE TAX COLLECTOR
Found only in the Gospel of St Luke, the short, but very rich story of Zacchaeus captures the entire message of Jesus’ mission on earth, to bring salvation to all.
Zacchaeus, small in height, proved to be a bigger man than all those in his home town who ‘looked down’ on him. He moved from being the one unable to see Jesus through the crowd to being the centre of His attention, the one privileged to welcome Jesus into his home, despite the disapproving crowd.
Sometimes, perhaps crowded or influenced by others, we fail to see Jesus in our lives. Like Zacchaeus, maybe we need to take the decision sometimes to ‘climb away from the crowd’ in order to see clearly the path Jesus invites us to follow. That is not always an easy choice. Zacchaeus’ choices were, in effect, a call to Jesus to enter his life and guide his ways. Jesus always hears and welcomes our call. He is there for us and wants to dwell in our hearts.

The 11.00am Mass is the Annual Mass for the deceased members of the Irish Defence Forces
Wednesday, All Souls Day: 10.00am and 7.00pm
At our 7.00pm Mass on Wednesday, those who have died in the past year will be remembered.
Thursday & Friday: 10.00am. Friday 7.00pm, Anniversary Mass for Joan McElchar.
Rosary commences 20 minutes before Mass.
Saturday: Vigil Mass, 6.30pm. Sunday morning: Mass at 9.00am and 11.00am

At our 11.00am Mass today, we remember the late Red Hugh O’Donnell. We welcome those who have travelled here for the weekend of celebrations and are joining us here today, as well as musicians and the schoolchildren for providing music and singing.

As a parish faith community, we offer our sympathy and our prayerful support to Andrea, Noel, PJ, Deborah and Kevin Jnr, to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to Paddy, and to the wider family circle and friends of Kevin, who was pre-deceased by his wife, Rosemary, just two weeks earlier. Kevin’s Funeral Mass took place in St Patrick’s on Thursday. May he rest in peace..

NOVEMBER – MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS:
MASS REMEMBERING THOSE WHO HAVE DIED IN THE PAST YEAR:
The Mass in our church this Wednesday, 2 November (All Souls Day), at 7.00pm, will be celebrated for our parishioners who have died in the past year and for those who have been buried in our graveyard in the past year. During this Mass, candles will burn in memory of each of the deceased (which you can then take home).
NOVEMBER SACRED SPACE & PRAYER INTENTIONS IN THE CHURCH:
Our Liturgy working-group will create a Sacred Space in our church for Month of the Holy Souls. From Wednesday of this week, 2 November, you are welcome to write out and bring along the names of your deceased relatives and friends, and place these in the box that you will find in the Sacred Space. They will be remembered during our Masses in November. You might also like to light a candle in the church in memory of your loved ones.
‘REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER’ SACRED SPACE IN OUR HOMES:
You are invited to create a Sacred Space in your home for November, in memory of our deceased family members and friends. Your Sacred Space might include some of the following: photographs or memorial cards, a little box or basket with the names of family members or friends who have died, a crucifix, rosary beads, holy water, a candle (taking care with it, of course!). Autumn leaves might be gathered; perhaps some purple material (if you have some) could be used to help create and adorn your Sacred Space. Parents, in particular, are asked to involve their children in creating Sacred Space in the home for November.
NOVEMBER PLEDGE:
If you drink alcohol, is this something you might consider? Many people choose to abstain from alcohol for the month of November and offer this prayerful act in honour of their deceased loved ones or for someone they know or love with an addiction. Visit www.pioneers.ie/pray
DIOCESAN MASS FOR DECEASED CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE:
The Annual Mass for deceased children and young people will be celebrated in St Eugene’s Cathedral, Derry, next Sunday, 6 November, at 7.00pm. All are welcome. You can also join this Mass live on the St Eugene’s Cathedral webcam. If you would like to have a child or young person remembered at this Mass, please email the name to lizzie.rea@derrydiocese.org .
CEMETERY COLLECTION:
There is a special envelope in your envelope box for this collection for next weekend, 5/6 November. This collection will go towards the routine costs of the upkeep of our graveyard. Thank you to those who maintain our graveyards to such a high standard, to everyone for keeping your loved-ones’ graves so well, and special thanks to those who care for graves where there is no-one to look after them.
Do This In Memory:
Hello, boys and girls. It was great to see you last Sunday and for you to be such a part of our Do This In Memory Mass. It was a very special occasion in our parish life.
This week, we are moving in to a month when we pray for and remember in a special way all our family members and loved ones who have died – the month of November.
You may be helping your mum and dad this coming month to create a Sacred Space in your house that will remind you and your family to pray for all the people you know who have died.
Meanwhile, Kath and Qumen are with us all the way in continuing to help us to learn more about the Mass and about all the things we need to pray and know about.
‘LEARNING ABOUT THE MASS’ CORNER:
KATH: Qumen, you seemed to know all those responses that the people at the Do This in Memory Mass were saying last Sunday.
QUMEN: That’s because I hear them at Mass every Sunday. My mum always encourages me to say them out loudly and clearly. Sometimes she has to nudge me, because I don’t always remember to pay attention.
KATH: But I’m sure you heard me joining in the Our Father? I felt proud, being able to say it along with everybody else. That’s because we say it in school every day, so I know all the words.
QUMEN: Yes, well, you see, that’s how you learn prayers – saying them often. The Our Father is said at every Mass. And, remember, the teacher told us it is called the Lord’s Prayer.
KATH: Wonder why it’s called the Lord’s Prayer?
QUMEN: I asked my mum that. She said it is because the Our Father is the prayer that Jesus taught to His disciples. She said that we know this because it tells us in the Bible.
KATH AND QUMEN: So, the Our Father, the Lord’s Prayer, is a very special prayer. No wonder it’s part of the Mass.
