SERVICE TO DEDICATE NOVEMBER AS A MONTH OF PRAYER AND REMEMBRANCE FOR THE DEAD AND THE BEREAVED
SUNDAY 1ST NOVEMBER, 2020
Invitation to Prayer
This Sunday at 3.00pm we will join in prayer with every parish in Ireland in a Service to dedicate November as a month of Prayer and Remembrance for the Dead and Bereaved. This year there is a huge yearning for consolation and hope in all our hearts. I am very mindful of those grieving families, who, because of the Covid 19 restrictions, have been unable to experience the customary spiritual and community supports of the Irish tradition at the time of the death and funeral of their loved ones. Be assured of our on-going prayers for you. I invite you to join with me on Sunday via the parish web-cam in this short prayer service as we enter into this special month of November. May all our loved ones who have died rest in peace. Amen.
On Monday 2nd of November, All Souls Day, we will have a special Mass for the Dead at 7.00pm which will be broadcast on our Web Cam. At this mass we will remember all those from our parish family who have died since last All Souls Day and a candle will be lit for them during the celebration. (The candles will be available for collection during the following week).
DIOCESAN MASS FOR DECEASED CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE:
The Annual Mass for deceased children and young people will be celebrated in St Eugene’s Cathedral, Derry, on Sunday 8 November, at 7.00pm. You can join this Mass live on the St Eugene’s Cathedral webcam. If you would like to have a child or young person remembered at this Mass, please email the name to lizzie.rea@derrydiocese.org or telephone 048 7126 4087.
Plenary Indulgence during month of November
Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the need to avoid large groups from forming where prohibited, the Plenary Indulgence applicable to the deceased by those who visit a cemetery has been extended beyond the normal dates of 1 to 8 November. This year, the indulgence can be obtained by anyone who visits a cemetery, even if only mentally, on any day in November, and devoutly prays for the faithful departed.
Plenary Indulgence for Feast of All Souls’ Day
Regarding the Plenary Indulgence attached to All Souls’ Day, 2 November, this year, it can be obtained on any other day of the month chosen by each member of the faithful. In this case, the indulgence is obtained by “devoutly visiting a church or an oratory”, along with the recitation of the Our Father and the Creed,
A special ‘Pilgrimage of Remembrance’ will be available for those who call to the church for private prayer in the month of November. Please see the Facebook page for full details.
‘REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER’ SACRED SPACE IN OUR HOMES:
For those who are unable to come to visit the church you are invited to create a sacred space in your home for November in memory of your deceased family members and friends. Your sacred space might include some of the following: photographs or memorial cards, a little box or basket with the names of those you would like remembered in prayer, a crucifix, sacred picture or rosary beads, holy water, a candle (taking care with it, of course!). Autumn leaves might be gathered and perhaps some purple material (if you have some readily available) could be used to help create and adorn your sacred space. Parents, in particular, are asked to involve their children in the creating of sacred space in the home for November. Those whose names you place on your sacred space will be included in the Prayer of the Faithful at our Masses in the parish throughout the month of November.
